Other partygoers include Donald (Matt Bomer), Michael's former flame, now mired in self-analysis; Larry (Andrew Rannells), a randy commercial artist living with Hank (Tuc Watkins), a school teacher who has just left his wife; Bernard (Michael Benjamin Washington), a librarian tiptoeing around fraught codes of friendship alongside Emory (Robin de Jesús), a decorator who never holds back; and a guileless hustler (Charlie Carver) hired to be Harold's gift for the night. What begins as an evening of drinks and laughs gets upended when Alan (Brian Hutchison), Michael's straight-laced college roommate, shows up unexpectedly and each man is challenged to confront long-buried truths that threaten the foundation of the group's tight bond

I think that objections to the 'negative stereotypes' in Boys have a common thread with knee-jerk attempts to remove the N-word from Huck Finn. How can we learn from the past if we erase it? How do we know how far we've come if we can't see where we've been? I've been around long enough to have seen every one of these characters, or parts of them, in gay men I've known or been. Guess what? I still see them, in younger versions, but with the addition of hope, self esteem and fuller, more authentic lives. This film shows the darkest part of the night, just before the dawn of Stonewall. Regarding Harold, I may have a different take on the comparison to Michael, who embodies every self-loathing pot hole on the road to gay self-acceptance. Harold is a hero of mine, because in my opinion he has emerged from the other side of stigma; battle-worn, brittle and sharp-tongued, but self-aware, able to cope and learning self-acceptance. He's been where Michael still is, and survived it. Yes, he still hangs on to all of those Nembutols in his cabinet, but he doesn't use them. Hard to describe what a hopeful revelation he was to me the first time I saw this film. Btw, I think Harold was a former figure skater, not stage actor. thanks for the excellently-guided tour down memory lane.

Those who think this is "good acting" need to understand the difference between acting and mimicry.
Jim Parsons barely transcends the character he plays in "The Big Bang, including his vocal intonations. It sounds like Sheldon - and that's no compliment. He barely has any change in intonation or volume in the entire play.
Enjoy it, especially if you're under 35, but don't confuse this with great acting or the reality of the original film, which was explosive when it came out. It's not a failure, it's just a scene the lines. Don't "BE" them, which is the essence of acting.
As for those who deem it depressive, it was an accurate representation of the psyche of many gay men of the time: self-loathing. And there's still plenty of that these days, sadly.
I'm listening to it, as I type, and even without seeing the expressions of the actors, it sounds bloodless, as in "devoid of LIFE." Everyone except Quinto is a caricature of a real actor. Or even more, a real PERSON.

It was a hard watch at times due to such viciousness but also very necessary & brave for 1970. It certainly paved the way with brutal honesty. Friedkin was fearless with his directorial execution.
